HULL is a recently completed commission for the Galoshans Festival in Greenock. A new venture into the medium of land-art, McKenzie produced the piece as a response to the festival's theme : 'between two worlds', deciding to make something which explored a relationship with the River Clyde.
'I wanted to make something that seemed functional yet inherently abstract, something that could simultaneously belong to the past and present, something uncanny. My practice often explores the theme of man within nature through painting, but I have been keen to explore making work that exists outside the gallery. Considering the history of the River Clyde, I re-discovered the Timber Ponds at Langbank and drew inspiration from their aesthetic. Appropriating their worn, time washed quality I wanted to create a juxtaposition by using artificial lights, producing a piece that held a peculiar presence within the landscape.'
